Doug and Rich, sons of AAPA member June Bassemir, took a year to prepare for a special car trip: a reenactment of the cross-country trip their grandfather, C. W. Tuthill, took in 1916. Their trip was successful! They left from 544 Broad St., Newark, NJ, at 6:30 am on November 16 in their 1917 Maxwell Model 25. They did not quite match the grandfather's time of 10 days and 16 hours, arriving in Los Angeles on November 28.
You can read details of their trip from their own blog, The Maxwell Chronicles. There is also a November 16 article in the Suffolk Times, "A 3450-mile journey across the country going 30 mph." The Wall Street Journal carried a story on November 30; the online version requires a subscription for full viewing, although you can access it indirectly by searching for "Coast to Coast in a Car With Wooden Wheels" and following the link.
Amateur journalism is a unique activity. Amateur journalists publish journals on paper & online & come from many perspectives: from deluxe letterpress printed journals, to Xeroxed newsletters, to artistically designed cards and ephemera. We embrace the spirit of being amateurs – loving what we do for pure joy and not financial gain – while creating top quality journals, zines, and homemade publications.
