Thick July Bundle Features Newcomers

The July AAPA bundle was a thick one, and included the efforts of a couple of newcomers in addition to our regular publishers.

One reason the bundle was heftier than usual was the presence of several multi-page journals with page size 5½ by 8½ inches. Foremost among these is AAPA's official organ, American Amateur Journalist, edited by Clarence Wolfshohl. The July issue (Volume 88, Number 5) laid the groundwork for recognizing new members by including biographies for three of them. It's great to get background information for these individuals and also see their pictures. The issue included the usual run-down of bundle content, a review of member Edwin Feliu's new book Ballads from the white mountain, a plea for connecting writers with printers, and a tease about an interview with President Tommy White in the next issue.

One of those new member profiles was for Dylan S. Wylde, whose twelve page The Monthly Raven Issue 01 appeared in the bundle. He includes a poem of his own plus eight more from nineteenth and early twentieth century poets. He asks poets to "Submit your verse to the Monthly Raven!" so perhaps a future issue will include poems from a variety of AAPA members.

A second new member profiled in AAJ present in the bundle, Scott B. Laughlin, shared the humorous story "In Quest of Stonehenge" in Flash Fiction (100 words). I look forward to reading more of Scott's work, and wonder if he might inspire others to do their own flash fiction.

Ron Hylton is no newcomer, but his "Largest Cruise Ship Visits Portland" was my pick for letterpress-printed item. He combines a 1974 article from The (Portland) Oregonian with personal reminiscences.
