When the August AAPA bundle arrived, I labored over its contents to decide on what "picks" to make. My first pass had far too many for this feature, so I whittled them down at the risk of eliminating some that maybe deserve to be included. But for better or worse, here are my selections:
Peter Schaub returns to this month’s bundle with The Pearl. It tells the story of a domestic feline (a housecat, that is) and a terrifying experience, told from the perspective of the cat.
Paige Breault explores how the balance of nature can be upset when thoughtless—even though well-intentioned—interference is perpetrated in our waterways. Examples are given in this month’s Recreational Science.
The Tribby Tribune published by Dave Tribby, is truly about our hobby, Amateur Journalism. Read about the history of The Fossils—the historians of amateur journalism. Dave’s lead article gives tribute to Marc Brosey, whose participation in AJ has been nothing short of awesome.
Finally, not a journal, but an intriguing concept: “Magic” Age Cards printed (letterpress!) by Dan Celani. Let someone pick from the cards, and you can tell that person’s age by the cards she/he has selected!
Amateur journalism is a unique activity. Amateur journalists publish journals on paper & online & come from many perspectives: from deluxe letterpress printed journals, to Xeroxed newsletters, to artistically designed cards and ephemera. We embrace the spirit of being amateurs – loving what we do for pure joy and not financial gain – while creating top quality journals, zines, and homemade publications.
